History

San Diego County was established in 1769 by the Mission San Diego de Alcala, and it was one of the original counties of California. It was named for the San Diego Bay, by explorer Don Sebastian Vizcaino for his favorite saint, San Diego de Alcala. Officially created in 1850, it included much of southeastern California, Los Angeles, Inyo, San Bernardino, Imperial and Riverside.

Hillcrest was originally inhabited by Kumeyaay Indians. During the early 1900's, Hillcrest was a suburban shopping district for downtown San Diego. Escondido was settled by Native Americans, and controlled by Spain during the late 1700s and early 1800s. It was officially established in 1843 by the Mexican governor. San Diego County is one of 58 counties in California.
